HOW IT STARTED…

In 1954 a young missionary couple, Rev. Dr. Mark Buntain and his wife Huldah Buntain obeyed the call of God in their lives and travelled by ship from Canada to Calcutta, India. They had agreed to serve in Calcutta for one year. That year turned into a lifetime of service to the people of Calcutta and its surrounding communities.

From the onset of their ministry, the Buntains faithfully proclaimed Jesus and reflected His light through acts of compassion. Moved by the plight of the city’s poor and homeless children, the Buntains set up the first Assembly of God Church School in Calcutta. The Buntains’ great love & compassion for the poor led to the setting up of a feeding program which provided daily nutritious meals for those struggling to survive on the streets and in the slums of Calcutta.

Together, they established a holistic inner-city outreach consisting of more than 100 schools, over 700 churches, a daily feeding program for 10,000, and a full general hospital that has treated 2.2 million people and provided free care to 880,000.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT.

Today the AG Church Kolkata worships in over 15 week-end services in eight different languages.

The scope of the work also includes a Home for underprivileged children; a Vocational Training Centre; and a safe shelter for the daughters of sex-trafficked victims. Several thousand poor people continue to benefit daily through our Feeding Program. Our child sponsorship programme helps to feed, clothe and educate children from the streets and slums of Kolkata.

As we look towards the future, we believe God has greater things in store for us – as we continue to extend Christ’s compassionate touch: to feed the hungry, to heal the hurting, to share hope in our needy world.
